Our History

A Brief History of Double S Ranch

Double S Ranch is undoubtedly a fantastic location if you’ve always wanted to experience ranch life or locate a weekend getaway like no other.

Johann Schmidt (John Smith) and his family, including a wife and seven children, settled along Lyle’s Creek a quarter mile west of Conover, North Carolina in the early 1800’s. A log cabin was home to this Pennsylvania Dutch family until they built their two-story farmhouse in the 1850s, which can still be seen along highway 16. The Smith Family’s roots run deep and their genealogy can be traced through much of the Conover community today.

Our family farm has faced many hardships, challenges, and changes through the generations. An obituary for B. Elmore Smith, my fourth great grandfather, details a time when Johnstons Confederate Army camped on our land only yards away from the farmhouse during the Civil War, commandeering the horses of the Smith farm to be used by the army.

The farm has continued to grow and thrive despite all of the challenges we have faced through the years. Double S Ranch has been operating as a cattle farm for the last 100 years. My sister and I are the proud seventh generation operating this farm and our children will carry on the eighth generation. We will continue to operate as a cattle farm, but we are excited to expand and also offer horse boarding services. Our intention with this addition is to provide exceptional services to our clients and strengthen our farm so we can continue to thrive for another 100 years.

We look forward to working with you!
